John McAfee was the public face of GHOST and the driving force behind a broader privacy ecosystem. This page focuses on his cybersecurity background, privacy philosophy, cryptocurrency advocacy, and the specific GHOST-related projects he championed — not a general biography.

From antivirus to privacy advocacy

McAfee built his reputation as a cybersecurity pioneer before becoming a vocal cryptocurrency and privacy advocate. His later projects — McAfeeDEX, Switch, and GHOST — reflected a consistent theme: digital activity should be private by default.

The GHOST announcement

In April 2020 McAfee announced GHOST as a privacy cryptocurrency. The original whitepaper proposed a PIVX-related Proof-of-Stake design; after the PIVX controversy, the project pivoted to a Particl-derived architecture.

Departure and return

McAfee announced his departure from GHOST on August 19, 2020, citing a management dispute, while distinguishing the GHOST coin from his broader privacy ecosystem. He announced his return in October 2020 and introduced a private stablecoin concept.

Detention, death, and continuation

McAfee was detained and died in 2021. Public GHOST code and community development continued for years afterward, including wallet updates, wGHOST, and the 2024 whitepaper.
