The Original 2020 GHOST Whitepaper Explained
Section-by-section analysis of the first GHOST specification.
The original May 2020 GHOST whitepaper proposed a decentralized, privacy-focused electronic payment network using Proof of Stake. This page explains it section by section.
1. Abstract
The objective was a decentralized, privacy-focused electronic payment network using Proof of Stake, in contrast to Proof-of-Work chains like Bitcoin.
2. Bitcoin background
The whitepaper opened by discussing Bitcoin, digital signatures, UTXO ownership, the blockchain, Proof of Work, and consensus — establishing the foundation before proposing changes.
3. The privacy problem
It then laid out blockchain transparency: sender visibility, recipient visibility, amount visibility, transaction graph analysis, address clustering, exchange KYC linkage, fungibility, and tainted coins.
4. Proof of Stake
GHOST chose PoS instead of PoW. The paper contrasted the two models.
| Proof of Work | Proof of Stake |
|---|---|
| Miners solve puzzles | Stakers forge blocks |
| Energy-intensive | Energy-light |
| Security via compute | Security via stake |
| Block 10 min (Bitcoin) | Shorter target intervals |
5. Cold staking
The paper described staking keys vs spending keys, hot wallet risk, cold staking delegation, and network participation without exposing spending keys.
6. Privacy
It framed privacy around three pieces to hide: sender, receiver, and amount.
